Pipes for water transportation

Extrusion of Water Transportation Pipes

custom tailored for every need

Water transport pipes are key components of water networks used to distribute drinking and process water. They are designed to ensure flow continuity, hygienic safety and long-term performance stability, even under continuous operating conditions

Tailor-made applications with Bausano extrusion lines

Plastic solutions are now widely used thanks to their corrosion resistance, chemical inertness and reduced internal scale formation, factors that help keep the network's hydraulic characteristics constant. These pipes are used in primary and secondary networks, urban infrastructure and industrial plants, where the geometric quality of the product directly affects pressure loss, energy efficiency and infrastructure lifespan.

Pipe types and regulatory references

Water transport pipes are produced in various configurations, selected according to operating pressure, nominal diameter and installation conditions. Main types on the market:

  • smooth PVC-U pipes for non-pressurized and low-pressure networks
  • PE and HDPE pipes for pressurized networks and underground installation
  • multilayer pipes for specific technical applications

The relevant standards, including EN ISO 1452 for PVC-U and EN ISO 4427 for PE/HDPE, define nominal diameters generally ranging between DN 20 and DN 1200, pressure classes and tight tolerances on outer diameter, wall thickness and ovality, essential to ensure compatibility with joining systems and fittings.

Dimensional requirements and extrusion challenges

Various materials are used in the production of water transport pipes, with the choice depending on the specific application requirements. The most common polymers are:

  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC): PVC pipes are widely used for water transport thanks to their durability, corrosion resistance and cost-effectiveness. They are suitable for both above-ground and underground applications.
  • High-density polyethylene (HDPE): known for their strength, flexibility and corrosion resistance, HDPE pipes are commonly used in water distribution and irrigation systems. They are particularly valued for their ability to withstand high-pressure applications.
  • Polypropylene (PP): PP pipes offer chemical resistance and are often used in industrial water transport, where exposure to corrosive substances is a concern. They are lightweight and durable.

The choice of the appropriate material depends on factors such as the specific application, environmental conditions, required resistance and cost considerations.

Configuration of Bausano extrusion lines

Bausano offers extrusion lines for water pipes designed to cover a wide range of diameters and materials. For PVC-U pipes, parallel co-rotating twin-screw extruders from the MD series are used, with screw diameters from 66 to 170 mm and installed power up to over 400 kW, ideal for ensuring uniform plasticization and process stability. For PE and HDPE pipes, Bausano uses E-GO single-screw extruders, with screw diameters from 45 to 150 mm and output that can exceed 1,500 kg/h, depending on the material and line configuration.
The lines integrate extrusion heads for diameters up to 1,200 mm, multi-stage vacuum calibration systems and cooling tanks designed to reduce ovality and internal stress, ensuring regulatory compliance and consistent quality.
