Wastewater Management Pipes

Extrusion technologies for durable, resilient drainage systems

Wastewater Management Pipes

Wastewater pipes are designed to convey civil and industrial sewage toward collection, treatment, or disposal systems. They operate under particularly demanding conditions, marked by aggressive chemical substances, suspended solids, and temperature variations throughout the service cycle.
Unlike pipes intended for clean water transport, wastewater pipes must guarantee constant hydraulic tightness, long-term chemical resistance, and mechanical stability even under high external loads. Performance continuity is an essential requirement for environmental safety, regulatory compliance, and the reliability of drainage infrastructure, particularly in urban and industrial settings.

Pipe Types and Regulatory Requirements for Wastewater

Wastewater network solutions available on the market differ according to diameter, wall structure, and material used, based on installation conditions and expected loads. The choice of pipe type directly affects system durability and ease of installation.
Main types of wastewater pipes:

  • smooth PVC-U pipes for civil and industrial drainage networks
  • structured PP pipes for large diameters and high stresses
  • multilayer pipes for industrial applications with specific chemical requirements

The EN 1401 standard for PVC and EN 1852 for PP set stringent requirements regarding nominal diameters, which can exceed DN 1200, dimensional tolerances, maximum allowable ovality, and chemical resistance. These standards require accurate control of the extrusion process to ensure product compliance along the entire pipe length.

Dimensional Control and Process Challenges

Wastewater pipe production presents process challenges heightened by the combination of large diameters, thick walls, and filled materials. Dimensional control is essential to ensure compatibility with jointing systems and long-term tightness.
Key challenges include:

  • control of ovality, especially on large-diameter pipes
  • uniformity of wall thickness around the circumference
  • management of residual stresses generated during cooling
  • stability of the material's mechanical and chemical properties

Even minimal variations in thickness or geometry can result in assembly difficulties, tightness loss, or non-compliance with the regulatory requirements set for drainage networks.

Plastic Materials for Wastewater Pipes

Bausano offers extrusion lines configured for the production of PVC-U and PP wastewater pipes, designed to ensure dimensional stability, process repeatability, and regulatory compliance even on large diameters.

For PVC-U, parallel counter-rotating twin-screw extruders from the MD series are used, with screw diameters from 66 to 170 mm and installed power up to over 400 kW for the larger models, suited to continuous production of smooth and structured pipes. For applications requiring greater flexibility or dedicated production runs, conical twin-screw E-ON extruders are also available, with screw diameters from 53 to 80 mm and guaranteed PVC-U output between 50 and 400 kg/h.

For PP, used in particular for large-diameter and structured pipes, Bausano uses single-screw E-GO extruders, with screw diameters from 45 to 150 mm and productivity that can exceed 1,500 kg/h, depending on the material and line configuration. The lines support pipe outer diameters up to 1,200 mm, thanks to dedicated extrusion heads, multi-stage vacuum calibration systems, and cooling tanks sized to reduce ovality, residual stresses, and thickness variations.

This configuration maintains the dimensional tolerances required by the EN 1401 and EN 1852 standards, reducing scrap and the instability typical of high-volume production while ensuring consistent quality of the finished product.
