WPC Profiles for Cladding with Bausano Extrusion Lines

WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) profiles are extruded components obtained by combining thermoplastic polymers with plant fibers, used mainly in outdoor applications such as decking, cladding, screening, fencing, and street furniture. These applications require mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and weathering durability, together with surface quality that remains consistent over time.
Compared to unfilled plastic profiles, WPC combines the natural look of wood with the strength and low maintenance of plastic: it does not require periodic painting, resists moisture, insects, and UV rays better than solid wood, and maintains dimensional stability over time. These advantages stem from a more complex rheological behavior, due to the high percentage of organic filler. This requires accurate control of the extrusion process, particularly during mixing, plasticization, and cooling, to obtain structurally stable profiles suited to long-lasting installations.
 

Materials and Profile Structure in the WPC Extrusion Process

WPC is formulated from a polymer matrix, typically PVC, PE, or PP, combined with natural fibers such as wood flour or other lignocellulosic fillers. The filler percentage can be high and directly affects density, stiffness, and extrusion behavior.

From a structural standpoint, WPC profiles can be produced with different configurations, depending on the required performance and intended use:
 

  • solid profiles, used when high mechanical strength is required
  • hollow profiles, designed to reduce weight per meter and optimize the weight-to-performance ratio
  • co-extruded profiles, with a surface layer applied directly in-line

Co-extrusion allows a surface layer with specific characteristics to be applied, such as greater wear resistance, color stability, and a more uniform surface finish compared to standard plastic profiles. This solution improves finished product quality, reduces the need for subsequent treatments compared to natural wood, and maintains production continuity.

Bausano Extrusion Lines for WPC Profiles

Bausano designs complete extrusion lines for WPC profiles, configured to handle high-filler materials and continuous production. The solutions are based on parallel counter-rotating twin-screw MD series extruders, designed to guarantee high torque, effective mixing, and precise thermal control along the barrel.

Available configurations cover a wide range of production needs, with:

  • screw diameters up to 158 mm
  • L/D ratios up to 36
  • installed power exceeding 300 kW, depending on the model and required output
The line's downstream section includes:
 
  • dedicated extrusion heads for solid, hollow, or co-extruded profiles
  • modular calibration and cooling benches, designed to ensure dimensional stability even on large sections
  • high-grip haul-off units, sized for heavy WPC profiles
  • synchronized cutting systems, for repeatable lengths and clean surfaces

The lines can be integrated with brushing, sanding, or embossing units directly downstream of extrusion, to achieve functional or aesthetic surface finishes without interrupting the production flow. The result is a stable, reliable line suited to producing large-section WPC profiles and formulations with high filler percentages.
